Another historic station building in Pilsen will undergo renovation

Reconstruction of the listed station building at Plzeň-Jižní Předměstí railway station will start this year. Správa železnic selected the company Chládek a Tintěra, Pardubice, as the contractor, its offer amounted to CZK 84,763,361. The more than a hundred-year-old Neo-Renaissance building will be completely renovated, the facilities for passengers will be improved and the publicly accessible areas will be barrier-free.

Construction is scheduled to start this December and be completed in early 2027. The work will take place while the building is in operation and will be divided into three phases.

The builders will repair the roof and facade, replace windows and doors, as well as modify the publicly accessible areas. To ensure barrier-free access, a lift will be built to connect the concourse with the platforms, where new public toilets will be built. A modern information and orientation system will also be installed.

In the past, the Plzeň-Jižní Předměstí station consisted of two buildings. The older Art Nouveau building, located further away from the centre, dates to 1905 and today serves mainly for cultural purposes. In 1921, the ever-increasing number of passengers, especially workers commuting to the nearby Škoda factories for their work, necessitated the construction of a Neo-Renaissance building.
