SŽDC Invests over CZK 1.1 Billion into Reconstruction and Modernization of Railway Crossings This Year

Continuous railway operation safety increase and even better equipment of railway crossings is one of the priorities of Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC). This year, it will invest more than CZK 1.1 billion into this area. Besides that, over CZK 650 million were invested into repairs and maintenance of current railway crossings.

I want all railway crossings with Category 1 roads to be equipped with barriers or replaced by grade-separated junctions up to 2023. Unfortunately the number of accidents with fatalities grows so that we must improve their safeguarding as fast as possible“, says Mr. Vladimír Kremlík, Minister of Transport of the Czech Republic.

In 2019, reconstruction and/or modernization of 130 railway crossings throughout the Czech Republic were completed. Reconstruction and/or modernization of 48 level crossings are under way and 216 more crossings are being prepared for implementation of such works. Financial means were invested into modernization of signalling equipment, an exchange of road warning devices or crossing constructions, installation of signalling for sightless persons or e.g. into building new light signalling equipment at level crossings which were equipped only by a St. Andrew’s cross up to now.

43 level crossings were newly equipped with barriers, warning light equipment has been newly installed at 48 more of them. 23 level crossings with Category 1 roads are still to be equipped with barriers; works are intensely under way at these remaining railway crossings. 529 more level crossings were repaired.

SŽDC also prepares completing signalling equipment at selected level crossings equipped by a camera system with automatic detection of offences or by a BlueTooth LCA beacon for warning information transfer.

Besides a standard safety increase at level crossings, 11 frequented railway crossings at main corridor lines will be replaced by grade-separated junctions. 31 level crossings were closed in 2019.
