ETCS System Installation on Main Lines in Prague and Neighbourhood Launched

Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) continues introducing the European Train Control System (ETCS) on its network. In a year already, it will be installed in the line section Český Brod - Praha-Uhříněves. The festive launch of this project having as objective to put the modern train control system on the line from Kralupy nad Vltavou through Prague to Kolín into operation took place today in Prague.

The SŽDC investment is based on the National plan for ETCS implementation. Due to other concurrent and conditional construction, it has been divided into four phases:

  • Český Brod (included) – Praha-Uhříněves (included)
Estimated term of completion is November 2020.

  • Praha-Libeň (included) – Kralupy nad Vltavou (excluded)
Estimated term of completion is November 2022.

During the first phase, the section Český Brod (included) – Praha-Běchovice – Praha-Uhříněves (included) will be equipped with the ETCS system Level 2. More specifically it concerns the stations Český Brod, Úvaly, Praha-Běchovice, Praha-Malešice, Praha-Hostivař and Praha-Uhříněves.

Current station and line signalling equipment will be adapted to allow transferring information on the sections’ free capacity, the routes’ and railway crossings’ state and other data to radio block centres (RBC). In the section Český Brod - Praha-Uhříněves, two RBC are going to be built.

Open line tracks and station tracks will be equipped by fixed eurobalises which serve for transferring information between the ETCS line part and on-board transmitters situated at the driver’s post. During the first phase, this will concern approximately 550 balíses.

Adaptations will be also carried out at the Traffic Control Centre in Prague where the ETCS technology will be integrated into separate service workplaces.

The supplier of the construction designated as ETCS Kralupy nad Vltavou – Prague – Kolín is the company AŽD Praha. For the section Český Brod – Prague Junction, the project is co-financed by the EU under the Connecting Europe Facility Programme (CEF).
