Extension of high-speed line in South Moravia has its designer

Správa železnic has concluded a contract for the preparation of the technical design of the section of the high-speed line (HSL) Šakvice – Rakvice. It will extend the already designed VRT Jižní Morava (HSL South Moravia) by approximately 10 kilometres. Originally, this line was to connect to the existing corridor Brno – Břeclav near Šakvice.

The contract for the preparation of documentation for zoning decision and documents for the EIA process was awarded to a consortium consisting of companies VALBEK, Valbek SK, Mott MacDonald CZ, MOTT MACDONALD LIMITED and EGIS RAIL. The designers will prepare a technical design of the line, which should blend in with the surrounding landscape as much as possible. When awarding the public contract, Správa železnic considered, among other things, suggestions received during meetings with the public and local governments.

VRT Jižní Morava, prepared from Modřice, was originally supposed to connect to the existing corridor Brno – Břeclav near Šakvice. However, ongoing design works have shown that the design from the feasibility study would restrict future traffic on the line. The new connection at Rakvice will be off-grade, double-track and will allow trains to use a speed of 230 km/h. The relocation of the exit was recommended and approved as well by the Central Commission of the Ministry of Transport.

Both sections will become part of the new high-speed line from Brno to Břeclav, which, once completed, will shorten the journey time by 10 minutes compared to the current line. The timetable for the works assumes that the zoning decision will be obtained in 2025. The construction itself should then start about two years later. The line will be used exclusively for passenger transport and trains will run on it at a speed of 320 km/h.

Správa železnic is preparing the technical design for more than 300 kilometres of new HSL. Some of them are expected to be completed this year. Design work also continues for two high-speed railway terminals – Praha východ VRT (Prague East HSL) and Roudnice nad Labem VRT.
