Fanta Building under Reconstruction

First works started on the reconstruction of the facade and roof of the historical Fanta building at the biggest passenger railway station in the Czech Republic. Renewal of the coating of this important building built in the Art Nouveau style will take two years and a half; total estimated investment costs amount to CZK 212 million. The investor of the construction being festively launched today is Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC); construction and restoration works will be provided by the company AVERS. Financing is assured by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.

Due to the importance of this building, preparation of this extensive reconstruction proceeded in close cooperation with conservationists. It means that all construction and technological procedures were designed in such a way to satisfy requirements of state care for listed buildings“, said Mr. Jiří Svoboda, Director General of SŽDC.

The passenger building in Art Nouveau style of the former Emperor Franz Josef Station dates from the period 1901 - 1909. It served passengers up to the opening of the new underground dispatching terminal in 1977. It bears its current name after its architect Josef Fanta. Construction works will proceed in several stages. They will start on the outside towers of the building; the second phase will deal with the building’s wings. Finally, the current state of the building’s central part will be ascertained due to recent construction works there.

Degraded and blown-off plaster will be removed and replaced by a new lime one. All stucco sculptural decoration, stone sculptural decoration and steel artisan decoration objects of art will be professionally renovated by licenced conservators. Construction works will also include a removal of non-functional components such as steel consoles or non-functional switchboards. Following the disassembling, remaining niches and apertures will be walled up.

When the roofing is uncovered, the state of the truss construction will be thoroughly assessed and it will be subsequently treated by a wood-borer, rot and blight suppressant. Lathing will be carried out, new roofing will be laid and tin sheeting will be made. Windows and doors will be expertly rebuilt. Unrepairable fillings or their parts will be replaced by exact shape and material copies. The fillings’ colouring will also be renewed based on the performed survey.

SŽDC also prepares reconstruction of Fanta building’s inner premises within a separate investment.
