Modernisation of the Corridor Will Stop Train Operation between Brno and Blansko for a Year

With a ceremonial tap on the rail, Správa železnic launched the implementation of three important projects between Brno and Blansko. Specifically, it concerns the modernisation of the inter-station sections between Brno-Maloměřice and Blansko (two separate constructions) and the reconstruction of Adamov station, which will receive, among other things, new platforms. The construction works will completely stop the operation of trains between Brno and Blansko from the middle of this December. The first two projects are co-financed by a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the project called Reconstruction of platforms at the railway station in Adamov is nominated for co-financing by the European Union from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF 2).

All three structures are located on the main railway corridor between Brno and Prague. “The implementation of all the constructions will improve the technical condition and parameters of the line, will allow increasing the trains speed and will ensure higher safety and reliability of operation. Passengers will welcome barrier-free access to the platforms in Adamov and at the newly improved stops,” says Jiří Svoboda, Director General of Správa železnic. Due to extensive construction works, the operation of all trains between Brno and Blansko will stop for a year from mid-December 2021. Passenger trains will be replaced by buses, most long-distance connections have been running between Brno and Prague via Havlíčkův Brod since April. Trains on the R19 line from Prague will usually terminate at Blansko station.

Brno-Maloměřice ST 6 – Adamov

The project envisages a complete reconstruction of the railway superstructure and partly of the railway substructure, construction of a new Svitava branch line and necessary modifications of the stops Bílovice nad Svitavou and Babice nad Svitavou. The contractor of the construction is Společnost MALADA, which consists of Subterra, STRABAG Rail and Elektrizace železnic Praha. The tendered price is CZK 2.4 billion excluding VAT. It will be finished in 2023.

Within the investment project, the railway superstructure will be reconstructed on both tracks between the stations Brno-Maloměřice and Adamov. Rails with greater wear resistance will be used in curves with small radius. In addition, selected bridges, all four tunnels, embankment and toe walls and adjacent rock slopes will be restored and several line speed dips will be removed. The railway stops will be rebuilt to meet the requirements for the movement of people with reduced mobility and orientation. In Bílovice nad Svitavou, a new pedestrian underpass will be built under the line, which will shorten the access from the car park to the platform in the direction of Brno. At the same time, passenger shelters will be repaired.

Reconstruction of platforms at the railway station Adamov

Construction of two new island platforms at Adamov station, accessible from a new footbridge across the entire track, will be brought about by an investment project implemented by Společnost Adamov (Swietelsky Rail CZ + Elektrizace železnic Praha). The cost of the construction work amounts to CZK 834 million excluding VAT. The island platforms will be fully barrier-free thanks to lifts from the newly built footbridge. It will also be equipped with staircases, and at the same time, it will provide a connection to the other side of the track to Hybešova Street. The passenger check-in areas will also be reconstructed, and the project also includes the construction of a car park with a capacity of 30 vehicles. The extension of the third station track will enable the handling of freight trains with a length of 740 metres. Construction will be completed in mid-2023.

Adamov – Blansko

The last festively inaugurated construction includes a complete reconstruction of the railway superstructure in the entire Adamov – Blansko intermediate section, renewal of the railway substructure in selected sections of the second line track and a complete reconstruction of the Adamov stop. All five tunnels, adjacent rock cuttings, bridges and walls will be rehabilitated. The construction work is being carried out by AdaBla (OHL ŽS + Firesta-Fišer, rekonstrukce, stavby + TRAMO RAIL). The tendered price is CZK 2.62 billion excluding VAT.

The most important for passengers will be the significant reconstruction of the stop in Adamov. The existing two outer platforms, which are situated in an unfriendly way, will be replaced by a new double-sided island platform, which will be located in the position of the current platform in the direction of Brno. This will shorten the walking distance for passengers from Brno and at the same time contribute to the easy organisation of possible closure measures. The edges of the platform will be 550 mm above the track and the length will be 170 metres. A sloping sidewalk will ensure barrier-free access.
