Modernization of Negrelli Viaduct Moved On to the Next Phase

Works on repairs of Negrelli viaduct continue intensely in the whole section 1.5 km long under reconstruction. Concreting of the support plate is under way; brick arches in the premises of the Florenc bus terminal including connected pillars are being re-bricked. Insulation is finished on the Hrabov branch as well as cast asphalt, anti-vibration mats are laid down.

The construction site in Prvního pluku Street was visited today by Mr. Vladimír Kremlík, Minister of Transport of the Czech Republic, accompanied by Mr. Jiří Svoboda, Director General of SŽDC and Mr. Tomáš Koranda, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HOCHTIEF CZ. ”The construction is visibly in its second half and it should be completed in a year. The reconstructed viaduct will allow introducing speeds of 60 kph and will contribute to a considerable increase of smooth riding and the number of dispatched trains. The area under the arches is considered for cultural and social use in the future in the Prague quarter of Karlín”, said Minister Kremlík.

The Negrelli viaduct is not only a unique historic landmark but from the railway transport point of view, it has an important place within the project of railway connection to Václav Havel Airport and to Kladno. It will be the first modernized section prepared for higher capacity of train connections“, said Mr. Jiří Svoboda, Director General of SŽDC. Outdated safety and signalling equipment will be replaced by a modern electronic one and 3.3 km of rails will be exchanged. The improvement will be perceived by inhabitants in the nearby densely built-up area as laying anti-vibration mats and installing modern switch points will allow a decrease of noise from operation on the viaduct. New railway superstructure will manifest itself on travelling quality by a peaceful and smooth ride.

At the end of May, a new bridge steel construction was laid down over Prvního pluku Street. During summer holidays, a new bridge over Křižíkova Street will be assembled. In the week starting 13 July, steel abutments will be placed on abutment walls. Construction works will result in a transport closure from the Musical Theatre Karlín up to the former barracks at the crossing with the Negrelli viaduct.

Reconstruction is going on in a length of almost 1.5 km. Railway superstructure will be completely exchanged including its technological parts, foundation and subsoil rehabilitation by grouting, jet grouting and micro-piles; 99 brick, sandstone or granite arches will be reconstructed from which 8 span over Vltava River“, said Mr. Tomáš Koranda, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HOCHTIEF CZ about the course of reconstruction.

All original 99 arches are being rehabilitated. During reconstruction, many non-homogenous parts and components differing both in construction and shape will be unified. Four arches at Štvanice Island were completely dismantled including the sandstone pillars down to the foundations. After uncovering, the state of the arches was analyzed during last year. For seven of them, their state was worse than expected. 20 arches were completely dismantled and assembled again. The bridge should be put into operation in June 2020, i.e. by 6 months later than according to the original schedule.

The construction designated as Reconstruction of Negrelli viaduct is co-financed by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility Programme (CEF). Total planned investment costs of the project will reach a sum of CZK 1,443,478,260 (VAT excluded). The rate of EU support is 85% from eligible costs. The subsidy can amount to EUR 36,646,713, i.e. approximately CZK 990,360,000 at maximum.
