Project of Czech-Saxon Cooperation Continued with another Workshop

On 17 June, another workshop of the project Cross-Border cooperation for the development of railway transport Saxony – Czech Republic took place in Dresden. Its objective was to present the current project state in the fields of transport, social economy and geology. Outputs reached will help in preparations of a high-speed railway connection between capitals of both countries.

The cross-border project is being implemented under the Programme for promoting cross-border cooperation between the Czech Republic and the Free State of Saxony 2014–2020, co-financed by the European Union. Its leader is Správa železniční dopravní cesty. The project has as objective to intensify and deepen cooperation of institutions aimed at the promotion and development of cross-border railway transport on both sides of Krušné hory (Ore Mountains), also in connection to the envisaged and prepared high-speed railway line from Dresden though Ústí nad Labem to Prague.

The project’s implementation goes on since 2017 when its starting conference took place in Ústí nad Labem. Since then, experts from both sides of the border meet at regular workshops and conferences where they inform each other on obtained results.

The workshop participants were presented with current results of transport analyses focused on regional cross-border links in passenger transport of both regions. Besides that, an analysis of potential opportunities for freight railway transport was presented; its source and possibly its objective are situated in the territory under consideration. Representatives of the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem informed the audience on current results of a very extensive survey among railway transport passengers and important companies of the Ústí nad Labem Region. Investigation on the Saxon side is still under way.

During the selection of the most suitable option for a railway connection under Krušné hory, Czech and Saxon geologists carrying out the necessary survey on the envisaged routes will also have an important word to say. At present, they already finalize a 3D geological model which contains all data from surveys carried out up to now.

Advanced conclusions of individual analyses and surveys were presented at the workshop which was of a great interest for the expert public. The next meeting of project partners with the public will take place during the closing conference, planned for next January in Saxony.

Construction of a high-speed line from Prague to Dresden will bring not only a competitive railway connection of these two cities but also a line-up of the Czech Republic to the high-speed network in Germany. Moreover, building a cross-border tunnel 26 km long under Krušné hory will allow transferring long-distance passenger and freight transport from the Labe Valley. The route between the Czech and Saxon capital will be shortened by 56 kilometres and high-speed trains will ride it in less than one hour.
