Railway Line between Praha-Smíchov and Praha-Radotín Is Awaiting Last Year of Modernisation

The year 2022 will mark the grand finale for the construction between Praha-Smíchov and Praha-Radotín. The last part of the construction works will be completed here during December of the upcoming year. The modernisation will have a significant impact, especially on improving the traffic situation around the very busy railway line on the Prague border. The capacity of the railway infrastructure will be increased and the line speed and safety of railway traffic will be improved.

Conventional trainsets will be able to reach speeds of up to 130 km/h, and trainsets with tilting technology up to 140 km/h. This construction also includes a complete transformation of the station in Radotín, where the construction works on a new check-in hall will begin next year. The total investment costs amount to CZK 3.6 billion; the construction is co-financed by the European Union from the CEF programme.

The newly opened 3rd platform has been serving passengers in Radotín since September this year. In total, there will be two new outer platforms, one island and one bay platform. Access to them will be via a reconstructed pedestrian underpass under the whole railway station and a new pedestrian underpass in the place of the cancelled level crossing. Lifts and inclined ramps will make the station barrier-free. The cancelled level crossing will be replaced by an extended underpass in Prvomájová Street. Drivers and pedestrians will start using it in November 2022.

In the middle of the upcoming year, builders will also start working on the construction of a modern check-in hall in Radotín as part of a follow-up project. It will provide facilities for passengers, ticket offices, toilets and additional commercial space. The single-storey glassed-in structure will connect to the existing extension to the historic building. It will remain on the site and be converted into a City-owned police station.

There will be changes at the bus stop in Velká Chuchle as well, which will be moved to the four-track crossing closer to the centre of the district. Outer platforms with off-level access via a pedestrian underpass are being built at the outermost tracks. In addition, the insertion of a crossover will create a branch line of the same name. A regular four-track line will thus replace the existing joint track section of two double-track lines heading to Radotín from Krč and Smíchov. Instead of the actual crossing in Velká Chuchle, the building of an overpass is planned as part of a separate second stage of the construction.
