Reconstruction of Line Lysá nad Labem – Čelákovice Begins. A New Bridge Will Span over Labe River

Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) continues modernizing the line No 231. After recently completing the Čelákovice Station reconstruction, it festively launched today the optimization of a connecting section to Lysá nad Labem. Its most important part will be a construction of a new railway bridge over Labe River near the Čelákovice-Jiřina railway stop. Total estimated investment costs exceed CZK 1.8 billion; the reconstruction should be completed in the first half of 2022.

A double-track line section Lysá nad Labem – Čelákovice is to be reconstructed. Adaptations will be carried out not only on the railway superstructure and substructure but also on railway crossings, bridges, the catenary or signalling equipment. A complete reconstruction is planned for the Čelákovice-Jiřina railway stop where platforms 220 metres long with a boarding edge 550 mm high above the top of rail will be reconstructed. New roofing will be built and extended according to the estimated number of passengers. These will also appreciate new information panels.

The main objective of the project is increasing line capacity which plays an important role in Prague suburban transport. At the same time, line speed will increase up to 140 kph. ”A key part of the construction will be exchanging the bridge over Labe River which does not meet railway transport needs especially due to its width arrangement“, says Mr. Jiří Svoboda, Director General of SŽDC. The bridge will be replaced by a new deck including adaptations of the substructure. This will allow connecting a separate construction of a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists in the future. After the reconstruction, the bridge will meet minimum vertical clearance requirements of 5.25 metres (up to now it was 4.7 metres); for construction purposes, it will be ready for a vertical clearance of seven metres.

Due to a high extent of passenger transport during peak hours and introducing single-track operation during closures, a branching line Káraný will be established to divide the section between Lysá nad Labem and Čelákovice into two ones. Works already launched include precisely the construction of a technological building for the Káraný branch line together with the necessary signalling equipment. This branch line will remain even after the construction completion for mitigating closures’ impacts during connected investment constructions.

Next March, a reconstruction of both line tracks and related continuous closures in the section Lysá nad Labem – Káraný will begin as well as construction of a final substructure for the bridge over Labe River and the provisional bridge. In 2021, construction will continue in the section Káraný – Čelákovice. Main construction works should be completed in January 2022; up to the end of July, finalizing adaptations will be taking place.

The supplier of the investment designated as Optimization of the line section Lysá nad Labem (excepted) – Čelákovice (excepted) is the company Lysá, consisting of firms EUROVIA CS, GJW Praha and Elektrizace železnic Praha.

Total investment costs equal CZK 1,820,788,824 (VAT excluded). The project is co-financed by the European Union from the Connecting Europe Facility Programme (CEF). The maximum EU support rate amounts to 83.07% from total eligible costs. National financing is provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
