Správa železnic launches construction of two new passenger buildings in Karlovy Vary region

Aš and Chodov, two stations where Správa železnic starts the construction of new passenger buildings. In the westernmost part of the Czech Republic – Aš – the existing passenger building will be replaced by a new one. Similarly, in Chodov in Karlovy Vary region, a new building will be constructed near the entrance to the platform underpass as part of the construction of modern platforms. The buildings are proposed for funding from the European Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) under the National Recovery Plan.

I am delighted that we are starting two construction projects today which will result in a brand-new passenger building meeting today's train travel requirements. Aš and Chodov will thus join the ranks of the upper station in the regional capital, where passengers already use not only modern platforms, but also a completely new departure hall,” said Jiří Svoboda, Director General of Správa železnic.

A beautiful station and its fine-tuned surroundings create the first impression of a visitor arriving by train. Of course, I am therefore glad that we will have a new modern building here, which we even had the opportunity to shape,” commented the investment the mayor of Aš, Vítězslav Kokoř.

The new building in Aš will replace the existing passenger building from 1971, which is oversized in terms of current railway operation and its condition is unsatisfactory. Therefore, the construction of a completely new, single-storey building with a significantly smaller capacity and an energy-efficient standard was chosen as the most advantageous option.

Compared to the existing passenger building, the new facility will be moved eastwards, closer to platform 2. The ground floor structure will consist of two blocks, different in height and material. In the entrance facade, the glass wall of the departure hall will be framed by a portal of faced concrete. The lower part with operation space, made in fair-face brickwork, will be connected to the hall block. Works will include the renovation of the roof of the adjacent platform used by trains in direction of Hof in Germany.

In cooperation with the town of Aš, the station forecourt area will be modified and a small bus terminal will be built in direct connection with the train platform. Apart from that, 22 public parking spots will be created next to the new passenger building.

The construction contractor is BERGER BOHEMIA who submitted a bid worth CZK 68.8 million. The investors are Správa železnic (CZK 61.3 million) and the town of Aš (CZK 7.5 million). The construction works started this October and will be finished by December next year.

In Chodov station in Karlovy Vary region, the new building will be located near the entrance to the new underpass built as part of the construction of modern platforms. The existing passenger building is in poor structural and technical condition, and operating costs are too high. Implementing such investment will rationalise the operation, adjust the capacity of the building to the actual needs and also simplify the flow of passengers.

The new passenger building will significantly increase safety and level of travel culture providing not only barrier-free access to the building and new lavatories for disabled people, but also a better interconnection with other modes of transport. Public access areas will be properly lit and equipped with features to increase awareness and safety.

The new passenger building will be single storey and will consist of a public and a non-public part. From the hall, there will be access to the passenger lavatories and service areas and, through a separate entrance, to the ticket office with facilities. The new departure hall will be spacious, bright, elevated and therefore clearly recognisable and identifiable for arriving passengers. The main entrance is expected to be located near the current pedestrian walkway, with additional access from Nádražní street.

The construction of the new passenger building is also related to the redevelopment of the station forecourt area, which will consist of a new P+R car park including parking for motorcycles and K+R near the technology building. The bike racks, including two boxes, will be located in the pedestrian area in front of the entrance to the building. A replacement bus stop and a bus loop will be built on the site of the current passenger building.

The construction contractor is STRABAG Rail who submitted a bid for CZK 34.4 million. The preparatory work started this August and will be finished in October next year.
