Správa železnic Noted 296 Events during the Sabine Storm

In connection with the Sabine storm (in English called Ciara) which stroke the majority of the Czech Republic’s territory at the beginning of this week, Správa železnic noted 296 events in total, from which operation was stopped in 192 cases. In the vast majority, operation was stopped due to trees fallen on the railway line. Fortunately, only in eight cases trains collided with tress, which is good news. Total damage amounted almost to CZK 9 million.

From a total number of 192 operation stop cases, 19 events concerned preventive operation stops; 169 events were caused by trees fallen on the railway line and four events had other causes (roof fall on tracks, installation in the trackage etc.). The worst situation was in South Bohemia Region and West Bohemia Region managed by the Regional Directorate Plzeň where 65 events occurred in total. The longest period of operation stop, more specifically almost 80 hours took place between Rybník and Lipno in South Bohemia where dozens of fallen trees damaged the catenary and due to hardly accessible terrain, their removal took a long time.

The worst situation was on Monday 10 February when Správa železnic noted 219 events in total; one day later, it was 76 events. As far as damage is concerned, it exceeded a limit of CZK 2.7 million in the two most affected regions; total damage for the whole network of Správa železnic amounted to CZK 8.9 million. Besides damaged railway lines and the catenary, some passenger buildings were also damaged during the storm such as in Turnov, Liberec, Praha-Běchovice or Újezdec u Luhačovic. These cases concerned mostly partly damaged roofs.
