Správa železnic Plans to Reconstruct 200 Crossings this Year

Správa železnic continues with increasing safety at railway crossings. It reconstructed a total of 155 level crossings for more than 1.5 billion crowns last year. It plans to modify another 200 crossings with an estimated amount of almost 2 billion crowns this year.

“Annual increase in the allocated investment funds also has a positive effect on the ever-higher amount, which is intended for the necessary adjustments of crossings. Thanks to this, we increase the safety of both railway and road traffic. We intend to continue this trend in the coming years,” said Jiří Svoboda, Director General of Správa železnic. Modernisation of level crossings and their higher security were also reflected in the number of accidents at level crossings. Last year, there were 143 collisions, which is 22 less than in the previous year and the least since the establishing of Správa železniční dopravní cesty (now Správa železnic) in 2003.

The plan for last year included modifications of 142 crossings, however 13 more realisations were achieved. Security was increased at 95 locations, at next 60 crossings the reconstruction consisted in the installation of modern technologies or surface modification at the crossing structures. From the point of view of increasing safety, the most common measure was to completion the light warning signal with barriers, respectively in 41 cases.

This year, Správa železnic plans to reconstruct 200 crossings for almost 2 billion crowns, and on most of them, security will increase. A total of 40 crossings will thus also gain barriers to the existing flash light crossing signals; these will be installed in another 30 places, which are so far secured only by warning crosses. The equipment of 8 crossings with a camera system will have essentially of preventive importance. From the point of view of safety, the planned elimination of 11 level crossings will also be important. Legislative changes that have come into force since this year should further contribute to the gradual reduction of their number.

Správa železnic gives priority to increasing the level of security, especially at level crossings, which are assessed as potentially risky. It involves the addition of warning lights, the installation of barrier beams and now also the technology of composite beams with LED diodes.
