SŽDC and the French Railway Company SNCF Will Cooperate in Preparing High-Speed Lines Construction

A contract on cooperation between Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) and Société nationale des chemins de fer français (French State Railway Company - SNCF) about preparing construction of high-speed lines in the Czech Republic was festively signed today. The cooperation’s objective is to prepare a SŽDC Manual for designing high-speed lines on the level “Documentation for issuing a decision on locating a construction” (DÚR).

The need to prepare an integrated manual for designing high-speed lines (HSL) in a very short time results from SŽDC Strategy which was adopted last year. One of its objectives is to assure the implementation of the Government’s Programme for developing railway Rapid Connections in the Czech Republic and to start construction of the first high-speed line section up to 2025. To observe this deadline, a partial takeover of the know-how of the infrastructure manager which has experience with HSL construction and operation will be needed at least“, says Mr. Jiří Svoboda, Director General of SŽDC.

Based on the input of the HSL Technical and Operation Study, the French infrastructure manager SNCF has been chosen as a suitable partner for cooperation. The typology of its lines is very similar to the typology of the pilot section in preparation in the Czech Republic, more specifically railway lines for passenger transport with a maximum speed exceeding 250 kph.

SNCF has much experience with HSL construction and operation. It has been operating high-speed lines for more than 30 years; at present, these allow speeds up to 320 kph. No other infrastructure manager has such an integral overview of the high-speed line railway system as SNCF. Of course, SŽDC could develop its own standards for issues mentioned above but it would take quite a long time and it would not be possible to use-long-term practical experience from France which was indeed a pioneer in building HSL in Europe.

The selection suitability was consulted with and confirmed by Professor Andrew McNaughton, Chairman of the InterCity and High-Speed Committee of the International Union of Railways (UIC) and Strategic Advisor to SŽDC for High-Speed Lines.
