SŽDC Renovates Railway Bridge near Zahrádky u České Lípy

A fundamental reconstruction is being carried out on the bridge spanning over the natural monument “Peklo” (Hell) near Zahrádky u České Lípy railway station situated on the line Lovosice – Česká Lípa. Among others, Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) exchanges the steel construction dating from 1911 which was in a technically unsatisfactory state. The construction supplier is the company Strabag Rail with total investment costs amounting to a sum of CZK 50 million (VAT excluded).

The bridge dates from 1898 and has three units; the steel construction is by 13 years newer. During reconstruction, the steel construction in the second unit with an assembled bridge deck will be replaced by a new one. Its weight including cantilevers equals approximately 134 tonnes, its span is 41.4 metres and its width 5.4 metres. It was brought to the construction site in parts, welded into a compact hole and subsequently relocated approximately 600 metres on the track over the bridge opening.

A part of the construction is also sanitation of the lower construction (arches, pillars and abutments), grouting, masonry, water-jetting of walls and gaps, building new bridge pier caps and prefabricated ledges including railings. Works on the bridge include also relocations of utility networks and reconstruction of the railway superstructure.

Due to the reconstruction, a continuous line closure in the section Blíževedly – Česká Lípa will last till 30 September.
