Total transformation of railway station Brno-Královo Pole can begin

Modernisation of the second busiest railway station in the South Moravian metropolis can begin. Správa železnic has selected the contractors, which are the companies OHLA ŽS, Subterra, FIRESTA-Fišer and TRAMO RAIL. The comprehensive reconstruction of the Brno-Královo Pole station and adjacent sections will cost CZK 2.9 billion. The passenger facilities will undergo a major transformation and a new modern transport terminal will be built. The first works will start next month and should be completed by the end of 2025.

The planned modernisation includes the construction of a new station building, which will also be part of the adjacent transport terminal. It will be a glazed and partly two-storey building. The ground floor will be used for cash registers, commercial space, and social facilities. In the middle of the hall there will be escalators leading to an elevated section with benches for passengers and other commercial space. During the construction of the new building, a temporary waiting room for 250 people will provide facilities for the public.

The station track facility will undergo a major reconstruction, the tracks will be extended, new platforms and their roofing will be built. The existing pedestrian underpass will be widened and at the same time extended to connect the station forecourt with Myslínova Street. Barrier-free access to trains will be provided by lifts.

A part of the line from Brno-Maloměřice to Kuřim will be reconstructed. The comfort of passengers will be improved by a new information and orientation system not only directly at the station in Královo Pole, but also at the stops Brno-Lesná, Brno-Rečkovice and Česká.

The construction will also include the rehabilitation of 13 bridges, 10 culverts, a road overpass and five retaining walls. The railway station will be equipped by new interlocking system as well. The reconstruction of the railway substructure and superstructure will enable trains to pass the station at a speed of 120 km/h.

The value of the construction works is CZK 2,947,820,093. The construction is proposed for co-funding by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund within the Transport Programme 2021-2027.
