Railway network in the Czech Republic

Railway transport in the Czech Republic dates back to the first half of the 19th century. Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the network was then taken over by the Czechoslovak Republic.

Throughout its history, the state has been the almost exclusive owner and operator of the railway lines in our territory, but still there were times when this was not the case.

Nowadays the state, represented by Správa železnic, is the owner of the majority of railway lines in the Czech Republic. České dráhy, a.s.,  (Czech Railways) is the biggest national carrier.

During its existence, our railways have transported hundreds of billions of passengers and hundreds of billions of freight tonnes and thanks to its transportation volume it ranks as 4th best in Europe.

Správa železnic has become the guarantor of operability, modernization and development of the railway system in the Czech Republic.
