Line section Benešov u Prahy – Votice covered by GSM-R signal

12.05.2016

Benešov, 12 May 2016 – Správa železniční dopravní cesty (the Railway Infrastructure Administration) introduced a digital radio system GSM-R along the line section Benešov u Prahy – Votice approximately 19 kilometres long. The festive completion of the construction took place today at Benešov u Prahy railway station.

”The construction of the GSM-R network has a crucial importance especially for operation reasons; its final impacts will be however perceived by passengers as well. It will allow not only simpler but also faster railway operation “, said Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of SŽDC.

The Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway (GSM-R) is an international standard of wireless communication in the railway environment. The above-mentioned completed project helps covering a part of Czech Rail Transit Corridor III with a GSM-R signal and is connected to the previous GSM-R network construction from Prague to Benešov which was completed at the end of last year. The construction corresponds in full to specifications of EIRENE (European Integrated Railway Radio Enhanced Network) which ensures interoperability observance in Europe. The GSM-R signal in this section will serve not only for voice communication but is quite ready for future implementation of the ETCS European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 and higher.

The main content of the project was the construction of base stations which ensure GSM-R signal broadcasting along the above-mentioned line section and thus a connection between the network user and its central connection system. Such a connection has many specific requirements, e.g. priority calls, a safe data channel, transfer of control and signalling data.

The GSM-R network is being used for transmission of necessary data and voice information between the fixed railway infrastructure and mobile train units, for sending text messages and gradually replaces older, mostly analogue radio system on our railway lines. The GSM-R system is the most modern radio technology for wireless railway communication. Thanks to the use of this unified radio standard in whole Europe, we will achieve considerably simpler international operation and higher safety on such equipped railway lines.

Total estimated costs of the construction designated as GSM-R Benešov – Votice amounted up to 72,728,248 CZK (VAT excluded). The project was co-financed by the European Union from its Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport up to a maximum amount of 56,131,638 CZK. National financing was provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. The construction’s supplier was the company Kapsch CarrierCom s.r.o.
