Travelling by train from České Budějovice to Volary is faster, safer and more comfortable

15.09.2016

České Budějovice, 15 September 2016 – Správa železniční dopravní cesty (the Czech Railway Infrastructure Administration) revitalised the regional line from České Budějovice to Volary. The biggest asset of this project is a railway transport safety and speed increase on this railway line within Šumava Mountains.

On the single-track line No 194 České Budějovice – Český Krumlov – Černá v Pošumaví – Černý Kříž – Volary 94 kilometres long, the railway superstructure and substructure were partially reconstructed and safety and signalling equipment was modernised.

”This construction’s implementation primarily allowed substantial decreasing journey times which will be surely appreciated by passengers. After the reconstruction, the original line speed of 50 - 70 kph with local restrictions down to 20 kph increased up to 75 kph and in the section České Budějovice - Boršov nad Vltavou even up to 90 kph“, said Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of SŽDC.

During the project, builders constructed new centre platforms at six railway stations and thirteen railway stops acquired side-boarding platforms. Four steel bridges were also reconstructed. Almost a half of 113 railway crossings were equipped with light signalling, thirteen more were provided with barriers. Selected switches at railway stations were supplemented with electrical heating. Stations situated in the line section Volary - Boršov nad Vltavou acquired new safety and signalling equipment that will enable remote traffic control from Kájov.

Total costs of the construction designated as Revitalisation of the line České Budějovice - Volary amounted up to CZK 1,628,825,850 (VAT excluded). The project was co-financed by the European Union from its Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport up to an amount of CZK 1,244,230,470. The application for a subsidy grant was approved by the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic; the approval procedure is currently under way within the European Commission. National financing was provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. The company AŽD Praha acted as supplier.
