Closure of Plzeň Main Station Southern Part Ended

On Thursday 6 December, the closure of the passenger railway station southern part at Plzeň hlavní nádraží (Plzeň Main Station) ended. During this closure, a new bridge spanning over Mikulášská Street was built, railway substructure and superstructure was completely reconstructed, new platforms were built and platform roofing was repaired. A new underpass will allow access from Platforms No 5 and 6 not only to other platforms but to a new bus terminal in Šumavská Street as well.

During the construction Junction Plzeň, Construction 2 – reconstruction of passenger railway station including the Mikulášská street Bridge, technological installations were built and reconstructed, the catenary was modernized and new signalling and safety equipment was installed. New lifts for passengers were built in the new part of the eastern underpass. Passengers will also appreciate a new orientation and information system. In the months to come, completion works will continue without any impact on railway operation.

More specifically, reconstruction of the connecting balcony at the passenger building head must be completed as well as the walkway between the northern bridge over Mikulášská Street and the exit from the underpass to Šumavská Street. Works continue also on the assemblage and testing of new technological installations. During a climatically favourable period, trees will be planted at the station’s forecourt; more gardening arrangements will follow. All works will be completed during the first half of next year. 

Besides modernization and reconstruction of the railway station, a new bus terminal in Šumavská Street will contribute to increased comfort as well. It will start serving passengers on Sunday 9 December and thanks to its construction, existing distance while changing from train to bus will decrease considerably from 3.5 km to several dozens of metres only. Building a change junction Plzeň hlavní nádraží together with a considerable railway station renewal and a completed modernization of the line between Rokycany a Plzeň constitutes another important step towards increasing public transport competitiveness.
