Visit of the British Advisor for High-speed Lines Professor McNaughton in the Czech Republic

Professor Andrew McNaughton, the strategic advisor of Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) for implementing the programme of developing rapid railway connections on our territory approved by our government, visited again the Czech Republic on 23. – 24 October.


A part of his visit programme was the visit of Plzeň and the company Škoda Transportation which took place in cooperation with the Association of Companies of the Czech Rail Industry (ACRI). Professor McNaughton led a discussion with representatives of the Škoda company in Plzeň on perspectives of the railway rolling stock which can be used in the near future in pilot sections of high-speed lines and got acquainted with production of NIM EXPRESS DB trainsets for the German national carrier Deutsche Bahn. These are being constructed for a maximum speed of 200 kph; on the line Nurnberg – Ingolstadt – Munich, they will be operated at speeds up to 190 kph.

On the following day, a discussion of specialists took place at the SŽDC Headquarters on partial outputs of feasibility studies for high-speed lines Prague – Dresden and Prague – Brno – Břeclav. Andrew McNaughton acquired much practical experience with the high-speed railway during its preparation and operation in many countries all over the world which makes him one of the most respected experts in the field. Thanks to this fact, he was able to have a critical view of works carried out by both studies’ designers and to formulate many distinct recommendations for further procedure. Thanks to Professor McNaughton’s professional view, discussions led with him unequivocally contribute to a better preparation of high-speed lines in the Czech Republic.
