New bridges improved travelling from Břeclav to Austria

07.10.2016

Brno, 7 October 2016 – Správa železniční dopravní cesty (the Czech Railway Infrastructure administration) reconstructed railway bridges on the line from Břeclav to the state border with Austria. This project’s implementation allowed increasing transport availability as well as current line speed and ensuring higher safety and travelling comfort.

The project’s main objective was the reconstruction of a double-tracked bridge which required extending the track spacing by 2 metres and raising the track gradient approximately by 40 cm. In each track, the current three bridge spans were replaced by a single steel construction 97.5 metres long.

In selected sections, railway superstructure and substructure was adapted as well as the track gradient direction and height due to directional parameters’ modifications for a speed increase up to 160 kph. It will be possible to maintain this speed on more than four kilometres on the line.

“The outcome of this construction will register not only in operation savings. Transport safety will increase too; moreover trains will be able to ride at higher speeds than up to now. Such a bridge construction type was used on the Czech railway for the first time. The bridge will capture attention not only by its technical parameters but aesthetically as well", said Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of SŽDC.

In accordance with the global objective of Operational Programme Transport Priority Axis 1 which is an improvement of railway transport on the Trans-European Transport Network TEN-T, the project allowed achieving higher transport availability. The construction will decrease requirements on bridge maintenance and allow preserving operation on the line with the requested line category and track clearance. Another positive impact of the reconstruction is a line speed increase and higher railway transport safety in this section.

Total costs of the project designated as Bridge Reconstruction in km 80,930 of the line Hohenau (ÖBB) – Přerov amounted up to CZK 455,073,001 (VAT excluded). The project was approved for co-financing by the European Union from its Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport with a planned contribution from this Fund amounting up to CZK 317,869,696. National financing will be provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. The company Břeclav most – FIRESTA + AŽD consisting of companies FIRESTA – Fišer, rekonstrukce, stavby a.s. and AŽD Praha s.r.o acted as the supplier.
