Railway Station Buildings Reconstructions Spent More Than One Billion Crowns This Year

15.03.2018

By the project work progress and the volume of financial means allocated, Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) updated a station buildings reconstruction mid-term plan presented for the first time in August last year. Up to now, more than 800 Mio crowns was invested to station buildings repairs and triggered reconstructions with more than 1 billion to be spent this year to this end.

“In almost 1.5 year from taking over buildings by the SŽDC administration, the smaller size reconstructions at almost four hundred stations began. By the end of last year, we succeeded in commencing first larger investment actions. The reconstruction in Lipník na Bečvou, Přerov, Kuřim, Hradec Králové, Turnov, Břeclav or Sokolov is progressing”, Mr. Tomáš Drmola, SŽDC Deputy Director General for Assets Management was quoted as saying. Up to 2023, it is foreseen by the station buildings repairs and reconstructions mid-term plan to invest in the projects of various size more than 10 billion crowns.

As mainly repairs of smaller stations due to a demanding project preparation are progressing this year, bigger passenger buildings’ revitalization such as Praha-Smíchov, Jihlava, Opava západ or Havířov are supposed to be started already the upcoming year. Let me point out that we talk about an assumption which may certainly be subject to change based on the projects and tenders for a contractor. However, the financial volume for administration, repairs and investment will definitely be increasing. In 2019, I assume it will amount to a total of approximately 2.9 billion crowns. It is our intention to  maintain this trend in the years to follow as well”, Mr. Tomáš Drmola was further quoted as saying.

More than 100 million crowns from a billion crowns allotted for this year will be spent for repairs and reconstructions of station buildings or project preparation right in four regions, particularly the Olomouc, Středočeský, Jihomoravský and Moravskoslezský region. From the largest repairs and reconstructions of station buildings implemented this year, the constructions in Břeclav, Kolín, Tachov, Bohumín or Hradec Králové can be mentioned.

In case of larger stations, financial amounts required for their repair vary in hundreds of million crowns with the preparation of their reconstruction being more demanding as well. However, the reconstruction of Fanta building at Praha Hlavní nádraží should begin as early as next year with the reconstruction of station buildings in Plzeň, České Budějovice, Pardubice, Teplice or Most becoming a reality upcoming years. SŽDC's priority is to perform reconstruction in the first wave of stations in regional and former district cities. It certainly goes without saying that the mentioned intentions and plans of SŽDC are still subject to consent and approval of the investment commission of the Ministry of Transport. “It does not mean, however, that the buildings in smaller municipalities will be skipped completely with them being certainly included in the mid-term plan. Even the smallest station under unsuitable conditions threatening people's health and safety must be repaired immediately. At some point, people are doing a double-take on the fact that a relatively less exploited station is repaired, albeit at a substantially more busy one nothing happen,” Mr. Dromola added.
