SŽDC Starts Repairing Stations in Moravia-Silesia Region for More than CZK 100 Million

28.03.2018

This year, Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) will start repairs and larger reconstructions of more than fifteen railway stations in Moravia-Silesia Region. The infrastructure manager expects total costs of constructions or project preparation amounting to CZK 106 million. Among the largest investments we can name completed repairs of the passenger building in Bohumín, modernisation of the railway station in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm or the reconstruction in Havířov or Oprva západ currently in its project phase. New escalators together with an extended information system will complete the newly built lifts at the main station in Ostrava.

”At present, we have projects for reconstructing large station buildings in Moravia-Silesia Region. Reconstruction of the building in Havířov belongs undoubtedly to the most challenging ones as far as financing is concerned“, says Mr. Tomáš Drmola, Deputy Director General for Property Management and adds: ”We have ordered preparation of project documents for a reconstruction of the whole building, i.e. not only the hall but also its administration part on the left side where we expect using these premises for the passengers and the carriers“. The city intends to use internal space of the railway station hall as a centre for sport and social activities which would include e.g. playgrounds, squash courts, a mountaineers’ wall, a café, a cultural area, clubrooms, cloakrooms and sanitary facilities. Total investment costs are estimated up to CZK 120 million; the construction will be going on up to the end of next year.

Another widely discussed passenger building in the so-called Brussels style is situated at Ostrava-Vítkovice Station. The building is quite oversized for needs of the current railway and requires immediate repairs. SŽDC ordered a study which will suggest and assess options of its further use with regard not only to the  interest of the manager but to the opinion of the passengers, the local government and professional public as well. It will also examine the current construction and technology state of the building. Based on outputs and results of a construction and historical research carried out by preservationists, the following step of project preparation will be launched. Total reconstruction costs are being estimated in tens of millions CZK; the final sum will be specified by the project as such. Nevertheless, finding a meaningful use both for the larger part of the hall and the administration building on the right side is a strict necessity. The implementation is expected not sooner than in 2020.

The railway station in Opava západ will undergo a substantial change as well. ”We are preparing a complex reconstruction of the whole building. The post office will be preserved and we have intense discussions with the Police of the Czech Republic. Therefore the project includes also necessary modification of the station premises currently not in use for needs of the Police“, explains Mr. Tomáš Drmola and adds: ”Premises for the public will also undergo a dispositional change in order to offer the required standard and comfort. Total costs are estimated approximately to CZK 70 million“. Transferring public institutions from commercial lease to railway station buildings owned by the state and currently not in use is one of the objectives of the whole concept for handling property managed by SŽDC. In Bohumín, repairs from last year will continue by reconstructing a part of the roof and the façade for a sum of CZK 17 million. This year, the remaining part of the roof and façade will be finished for a sum of CZK 45 million;, fixtures, and the heating will be complexly reconstructed as well. All windows and doors will also be replaced.

A study for new escalators to connect directly the ground floor to train access is being elaborated for Ostrava Main Station. At the same time, a new information system will be completed on the overpass and the first floor. Another important investment reaching millions of CZK is the installation of safety technology. Total costs will reach approximately CZK 24 million.

”From other railway stations that are going to be complexly modernised and where we expect to start implementation this or next year we can name passenger buildings in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, Jistebník, Kravaře ve Slezsku, Valšov or Krnov. This year, repairs will be completed with a visible appearance improvement or better public premises in Dětmarovice, Mosty u Jablunkova, Štítina or Návsí. We are preparing repairs under through supervision of the preservationists in Frýdek-Místek, Opava východ and Bruntál which are historic landmarks”, closes Mr. Drmola.
