Passage through Ostrava-Vítkovice Station Is Now Faster

14.12.2017

Správa železniční dopravní cesty festively completed the reconstruction of a part of Ostrava-Vítkovice railway station which is situated on a double-track electrified nationwide railway line leading from Český Těšín to Ostrava-Svinov. The project’s asset is especially a speed increase of trains at the station and in the connecting line section as well as higher railway operation safety.

The construction included adaptations of the Kunčice station head at Ostrava-Vítkovice Station, i.e. the track development in direction Ostrava-Kunčice. Superfluous tracks and switches in the station were put out of service and new signalling and telecommunication equipment of Category 3 was proposed to be installed on such modified and reduced trackage. Thanks to the project implementation, line speed could be increased from the original 80 kph up to 120 kph which will bring shorter journey times of trains as a result.

”The current trackage of the Kunčice station head did not meet operation requirements anymore, especially due to a bad technical shape of the railway superstructure and substructure. Reconstruction of these installations allowed not only to assure smooth operation for several tens of years but also to improve railway operation safety by lowering risks of possible accidents or defects”, said Mr. Jiří Macho, Director of SŽDC Regional Directorate in Ostrava.

In accordance with the global objective of Operational Programme Transport Priority Axis 1 which is an improvement of railway transport on the Trans-European Network TEN-T, higher transport availability was achieved and railway infrastructure capacity and operation quality for a prospective transport extent was assured

The project designated as Reconstruction of Kunčice Station Head at Ostrava-Vítkovice Railway Station was supported considerably from the European Union. The project was a phased one:  Phase 1 of the project was co-financed within OPT 2007–2013 and Phase II within OPT 2014–2020. Total costs of the project (Phase I and Phase II) equalled CZK 483,364,066 (VAT excluded). The planned EU contribution from its Cohesion Fund for the whole construction amounted up to CZK 325,912,618. National financing was assured by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
