Passenger Building in Sokolov Now Serves Both Rail and Bus Transport

20.11.2018

The complete reconstruction of the railway station building in Sokolov is finished. The building will now serve as a common terminal both for railway and passenger transport passengers. The construction investor was Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC), works for a price of CZK 25.3 million were carried out by the company SWIETELSKI stavební. Repairs of the building took almost one year and its festive opening took place today.

During construction works, the building was completely revitalized and its internal layout was changed in order to increase comfort for passengers. Last but not least, future energy savings were also taken into account during reconstruction. The dispatching hall includes new desks for selling travel documents of rail and bus transport carriers. ”The railway passenger building reconstruction in Sokolov was one of the long-term priorities of the city as well as of the Karlovy Vary Region. I am very pleased that we succeeded in coming to an agreement on cooperation with the city and that our building wills serve passengers from trains and buses. Such multi-functional terminals are very important for public transport competitiveness“, said Mr. Mojmír Nejezchleb, Deputy Director General for Infrastructure Modernization.

The reconstruction included changing public the lavatories’ location and building a lavatory for handicapped passengers; new premises for complementary services for passengers are prepared as well. Publicly accessible space of the railway station is completely barrier-free. The passenger building is heated, it has new windows and the ceiling above the second storey overhead is heated too. At the same time, the roofing was exchanged with partial repairs of truss and roof formworks.

”Every reconstruction of older buildings has its surprises. In this case, it was e.g. degraded masonry, venting units in bearing walls together with a resulting new statics assessment or unrevealed routes of distribution. We were able to cope with everything although it was more demanding and complicated, even more because we had to keep the passenger building in operation”, explained Mr. Miroslav Lovecký, Director of the Reinforced Concrete unit in the Building Structure West factory of the company Swietelsky stavební.

The construction included also a new wiring system distribution, a lightning rod, light-current distribution as well as cold and hot water and sewerage distribution. New orientation and information systems will help passengers while moving throughout the Sokolov railway station; floors’ heating in publicly accessible premises will assure a warm environment. At the same time, the city of Sokolov assured for its own costs a harmonization of the facade colour layout of the passenger building’s left “tower” adjoining to the bus terminal which was reconstructed for the city’s needs in 2012.
