Four-Track Railway Line To Be Established in the Capital in Three Years

13.03.2018

Today, Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) signed a contract with a group of companies Metrostav, Swietelsky Rail CZ and SMP CZ on modernization of the line section between Praha - Hostivař Station and Praha Hlavní nádraží Station. By the end of the year, the first ever four-track line will be established thanks to this modernization in the SŽDC network. The construction follows the already finished reconstruction of Praha - Hostivař Station with its results being, inter alia, a new station in Zahradní Město and the stop in Eden.

During modernization, the line from Praha to Benešov will be transferred to a more straight line heading through the area of a former lining-up station in Vršovice. The line from Praha - Malešice will be transferred as well to conjunct it so as to establish a four-track section together with the latter one. By straightening the line, the tracks will be shortened by 232 m with speed increasing in the area of Strašnice up to 120km/h and Vršovice up to 85-105km/h.

“Neither the existing stop in Strašnice nor the one in Vršovice offer an optimal transfer connection to public transport (MHD). Even though the line crosses the busy bus lines at two points, it is not possible to change to those lines. Due to this, new stations will emerge on these places. Praha-Zahradní Město railway station will emerge directly over the broadened underpass of Průběžná Street. The tram stops will be located therein with the bus stops being in the closest vicinity,” Mr. Mojmír Nejezchleb, SŽDC Deputy Director General for Railway Modernisation was quoted as saying. In the support of the underpass, passengers will find a waiting room and check-in premises. They will reach the platform from the underpass not only by footpaths and stairways but by lifts and escalators as well.

At the crossing point with the bus tangent of Jižní Město – Vinohrady located in the vicinity of Slavia football stadium, a Praha – Eden stop will be established. On the other hand, the railway stop there will be closed by cancelling the line via Strašnice. Praha - Vršovice station will serve passengers further as well, albeit by extending the underpass in direction of Bartoškova Street and by this to náměstí Bratří Synků as well, on the opposite end to the area in front of the station so as to improve reaching a built-up area. Barrier-free modifications of the whole station and a partial roofing of the platforms become a matter of course.

The project Optimization of line section of Praha - Hostivař – Praha Hlavní nádraží, Praha - Hostivař  – Praha Hlavní nádraží Part II is co-financed by EU from the programme  of Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). A projected sum of expenditure for the construction amounts to a total of 4,419,960,495 CZK. An EU awarded support volume reaches 82.14% of eligible expenditures, which means that the subsidy amounts to a maximum of 110,309,931 EUR, i.e. roughly 3 billion CZK.
