Reconstruction of Bridges in Plzeň over Mikulášská Street Near Final Stage

31.08.2018

A bidirectional restoration of road and tram traffic in Mikulášská Street on Friday 31 August concluded another phase of the investment of Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) designated as Junction Plzeň, Construction 2 – reconstruction of passenger railway station including Mikulášská bridges. At the same time, the road for automobiles under both bridges was considerably modernized and extended which will have a positive impact on smoothness and safety of road transport in this locality.

”Reconstruction of the Cheb station head and both bridges is important for modern and more effective railway transport. However, passengers will most appreciate reconstruction of platforms and their roofing, access to platforms including lifts and escalators and building a new underpass in the eastern part of the station“, says Mr. Mojmír Nejezchleb, Director General of SŽDC for Infrastructure Modernization.

The new northern bridge was successfully put into operation at the end of last year; works on removing the southern one began this January. Both bridges were continuously in operation service for more than a hundred years, their old steel construction was replaced by a new one. The northern bridge now consists of two separate slab constructions from prestressed concrete, the southern one consists of a slab composite steel concrete construction with embedded steel girders with chamber supports. Thanks to the extension of the new bridge construction by 10 m to a total of 25 m, space will be provided for extending the road as well. In connection to construction works, activities of modernizing safety and signalling installations’ technologies, low voltage distribution systems, lighting and traction are being carried out too. In the area of the station forecourt and Mikulášská Street, new pavements for pedestrians are being built.

”We have had built a new parking for road cars with a capacity of 63 places in front of the main building entrance. In case of closures in railway transport, it can serve for parking up to six buses for substitute transport“, added Mr. Pavel Šindelář, Plzeň Deputy Mayor for Technology..

”Thanks to careful preparation, coordination and extensive engagement, we have managed to complete another milestone of this construction. We firmly believe that we will cope with the last December term as well and we will finalize the whole project in time. A big asset for passengers will also be shorter journey times on the line between Plzeň and Prague, thanks to the Ejpovice, tunnels which will be opened for the public up to the end of the year“, stated Mr. Karel Volf, Commercial Director of Metrostav.

Construction works will continue in the southern part of the main station in Plzeň where new platforms are going to be constructed with roofing as well as a part of the service and eastern underpass, technological installations or reconstruction of the railway substructure and superstructure. Main construction works should be finished at the end of this November. Final completion is planned for the first half of next year.
