The Prevention Train for a Safe Railway Heads to Brno

03.06.2018

The successful project of České dráhy and Správa železniční dopravní cesty “Prevention Train for a Safe Railway” participates this year too in the project “Days in Brno without Accidents”. It will be awaiting students from high schools from 5 to 7 June at Brno-Královo Pole Station.

The Prevention Train has been organised by České dráhy since 2007. It is designed for pupils of primary schools and students of high schools and training institutions. The project is based on an untraditional way of communication with young people which proved to be very useful during its previous rides. In ten years, more than 18 thousand of young people from forty cities have visited this train.

”The carrier’s social includes also the field of prevention on the railway. Yearly accidents’ statistics are still a strong impulse for České dráhy to continue precisely its prevention activities. We know from practice that most accidents occur quite needlessly, in most cases due to a lack of discipline, taking risks and frequent underestimating of the situation by drivers and pedestrians. Young people between 14 – 19 years of age belong to the most endangered group. Therefore we try to appeal actively and systematically to children and young people by using also a secondary effect; by their intermediary we can influence adult people in their vicinity as well. We show right in the railway environment that that law must be observed and basic regulations of safe behaviour have to be respected“, said Mr, Michal Štěpán, member of the Board of Directors of České dráhy responsible for passenger transport.

Správa železniční dopravní cesty as the railway infrastructure manager supports this project from its very beginning. Firemen from the local SŽDC Fire Service unit are always present at the Prevention Train exhibition venues. Their presentation includes a simulation of training interventions, students can try e.g. providing first aid under professional guidance and get thoroughly acquainted with firemen’s’  equipment and gear.

In the Prevention Train conference car, investigators of SŽDC and the Czech Police lecture students about correct behaviour on the railway and show them consequences when people willingly infringe regulations and risk not only their own lives but also lives of their relatives or friends. At the same time, an instructing acted documentary movie called “You won’t make it!” is projected to students in which SŽDC presents five real stories of young people’s dangerous behaviour.

”For the time of the Prevention Train project’s existence, thousands of students passed its specially adapted coaches. We must constantly warn young people of danger waiting on the railway as they often do not realize that within a single second, e.g. during their favourite activity of climbing over cars put out of service, their life can change drastically. If they carry out these activities on electrified railway lines, they can lose their lives or get seriously burnt by an electrical discharge from the catenary. The burns’ treatment takes often several months, it is very painful and the consequences in form of ugly scars never go away. That is why I am convinced that such events are worth indeed and we will be supporting them in the future as well”, says Mr. Jiří Svoboda, Director General of SŽDC.
