Olomouc Main Railway Station Got a Modern Shape

30.03.2017

Today, Správa železniční dopravní cesty festively completed after several years the reconstruction of the main railway station in Olomouc. Besides overall modernisation of the station, the project had also as objective increasing line speed which allowed shortening journey times especially for fast trains. The construction was implemented by an association of companies led by OHL ŽS.

Within the premises of the railway station i Olomouc hlavní nádraží, the main and passing tracks were completely reconstructed. The current platforms were modernised and acquired new roofing. Passengers will get to these platforms as well as to the reconstructed underpass by escalators. An important part of the construction was also rebuilding bridges and culverts in the given line section.

”Among indisputable positive aspects of the construction we can stress the importance of a new centre platform No 5 which increased the station’s capacity as this is one of the most frequented stations on the SŽDC network“, said Mr. Mojmír Nejezchleb, Deputy Director General of SŽDC for Infrastructure Modernisation.

Thanks to the reconstruction, the station was put into a satisfactory shape from the point of view of construction technology and operation. ”The result is especially increasing line speed up to 160 kph on sufficiently long lone sections. Another important component of the modernisation was ensuring required capacity and equipping the line with technological installations which enable safe operation on a satisfactory level“, said Mr. Roman Veis, Director of OHL ŽS Division Z - Railway.

Train routes in all directions were provided with new signalling and communication equipment. Reconstruction affected also the electrical distribution system, power feeding and lighting. The construction included also modernisation of the catenary in the whole affected line section. Signalling equipment including integrated telecommunication installations was modernised as well. An automated system of traffic control technology is newly in use.

The project designated as Reconstruction of Olomouc railway station was considerably supported by financial resources from the European Union. The project was a phased one when Phase I  of the project was co-financed within OPT 2007–2013 and Phase II v within OPT 2014–2020. Total costs of the project (Phase I and II) equalled CZK 2,484,792,972 (VAT excluded). The planned EU contribution from its Cohesion Fund for the whole construction amounted up to CZK 1,776,068, 979 from which the contribution for Phase II can reach up to CZK 441,503,659. National financing was provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
