Students tried out working as a train dispatcher

11.11.2016

Správa železniční dopravní cesty (the Czech Railway Infrastructure Administration - SŽDC) has been offering since last year already the possibility to try out some professions from the railway. Thanks to the project “Become a…. for one day”, students have the possibility to visit selected workplaces of the railway infrastructure manager and discover what work on a given position is like.

Twice already, young people had the possibility to get acquainted with work of railway firemen; on Wednesday 9 November, the profession of station dispatcher followed. The dozen of selected applicants who satisfied requirements for entry started their day at the High School for Electrical Technology and Engineering at Praha-Záběhlice. The agenda included a demonstration of operation control in the dispatcher room and simulated transport control at Praha Hlavní nádraží (Prague Main Station). Naturally all participants tried out the simulator by themselves.

Following that, students transferred to a real dispatcher room at Praha-Hlavní nádraží where they could see everything for real. The last stop was scheduled at Praha-Horní Počernice Station where the train dispatcher showed them how to operate older safety equipment.

As a reminder of an interesting excursion, all participants of the project received a red cap as an inherent part of the train dispatcher’s profession. The organisers of this event believe that some of the participants will soon complete the staff of SŽDC.
